Fortress remains [ Fortifications, fortress or bunker ]

On the basis of a decision made by the Emperor Josef II (after 1765), the city became for more than a hundred years a massive fortress.
The fortification of the city, however, by itself meant little militarily, as the slaughter of Austrian units by the Prussian army in 1866 showed - several years later the fortress was abandoned, and the Medieval ramparts demolished.
