The largest City Hall complex in the Czech Republic, nowadays the building houses the offices of Ostrava City Council, plus the offices of the municipal districts of Moravian Ostrava and Přívoz, the National Academic Library, the Czech Savings Bank (Česká spořitelna), the regional offices of national ministries, an exhibition gallery in the foyer (including a bust of the first Czechoslovak president T. G. Masaryk by Josef Mařatka, which was unveiled in 2000 on the anniversary of his birth), a viewing tower, a branch office of the City Information Centre, and the City Hall restaurant. The City Hall was built from 1925-30, and the project was directed by Vladimír Fischer (Brno), Vladimír Kolář and Jan Rubý (Ostrava). It was officially opened on 28 October 1930. It is a grandiose building with two wings joined by a central block, a four-sided viewing tower (86m high), a constructivist facade, a portico with 6 columns supporting a terrace with pilasters, and 4 bronze statues by Václav Mucha symbolising the four functions of the city: mining, trade, learning and metallurgy.
